"Fight Clean" Neighborhood Clean-Up Campaign

Regional Center for Border Health, Inc. received a grant award to support the "No Contamine/Don't Trash La Frontera", An Educational Awareness Campaign for the Prevention of Illegal Dumping EPA Region 9, Border 2012 BECC/COCEFThe "No Contamine/Don't Trash La Frontera" is an international project between Yuma County, Arizona and San Luis R. C. Sonora, that will address Border 2012 goals by creating and engaging an International Alliance of private, state and federal, tribal and public organizations. The International Alliance will put together a clearinghouse for existing resources of reclycling centers in addition to increasing the promotion, education and awareness of proper management of solid waste (recycling, prevention, education) among residents of the Yuma County, Arizona/San Luis R. C. Sonora border. In addition, the alliance will coordinate and sponsor clean up campaigns on both sides of the border targeting areas most impacted by illegal dumping and involving school age children, young adults and the overall community.For more information on the project please visit us at www.donttrashlafrontera.com

During the 6-week program, the RCBH's staff provided with an educational training on the importance of recycling to the YPIC-Summer Youth High School Student Program participants. The students learned the 3 R's (reduce, reuse and recycle) concepts, its importance, and how to include these terms at home. The purpose of the program is to understand the importance of recycling at home and the different ways to reduce, reuse and recycle. They also estimated how long some trash items last; understand the process and the environmental consequences of improper waste disposal.

RCBH conducted "Neighborhood Clean-Up Campaigns" in Somerton and San Luis, Arizona. On July 16th and 28th, 2009 a total of 5 tons of trash was collected from 6 targeted areas in the City of San Luis and City of Somerton. Organizations involved were City of San Luis, City of San Luis Police Department and City of Somerton and their respective Department of Public Works and City of Somerton Community Development. A total of 25 volunteers participated in each site. Before and after photos are shown below.
