Since 1992, Regional Center for Border Health, Inc. (RCBH) formerly know as Western Arizona Area Health Education Center (WAHEC), has sponsored the quarterly meetings for the Binational Health & Environment Council in coordination with the Yuma County Public Health Services District and Servicios de Salud de Sonora/Hospital General. The Binational Health and Environment Council, San Luis R. C. Sonora/Yuma County, Arizona is designed to serve as the community branch to the U.S.-Mexico Border Health Association to support and carry out health activities along the U.S.-Mexico border. This activity took place at Friendship Park located right on the border of San Luis, Arizona, and San Luis, R.C., Sonora, Mexico. Charming pre-school age children from both sides of the border participated in the mock immunization kick-off event. On October 15, 2007 the Binational Immunization Campaign was held. Free Immunizations were administered at the Friendship Park in San Luis, Arizona. Approximately 194 immunizations were administered to 66 children. During that same day, across the border, Hospital General/Servicios de Salud de Sonora in San Luis R. C., Sonora, Mexico held their own immunization campaign in San Luis R. C. Sonora. The purpose of the event was to strengthen prevention activities and to provide awareness and education to the community. Annual Binational TB Symposium Regional Center for Border Health, Inc., Secretaria de Salud/Hospital General, Communicable Diseases Subcommittee and the Yuma County Public Health Services District in collaboration with U.S.-Mexico Border Health Association presented the 14th Annual TB Symposium on December 7, 2007 in San Luis R. C., Sonora. The goal of the conference is to bring together healthcare professionals on both sides fo the US-Mexico border that deal with cross-border turberculosis and to attempt to reach consensus on future TB control activities. Border TB Photovoice Training Regional Center for Border Health, Inc. Secretaria de Salud/Hospital General and Communicable Diseases Subcommittee in collaboration with U.S.-Mexico Border Health Association hosted the training in San Luis R. C. Sonora. The goal of the training is to increase the knowledge of global problem known as tubeculosis, helping to eradicate tuberculosis meningitis. The objectives are to support and mobilize tuberculosis patients to take a stand and bring social changes. To generate access to decision makers, by conducting informative investigations that can help create communication strategies and program development. To expose project results with a Binational, local and a more human perspective. A total of 10 patients participated from San Luis R. C. Sonora. Binational "Clean Air" Calendar Regional Center for Border Health, Inc. and the Environmental Health Subcommittee proudly presented the 2008 edition of the "Yuma County/San Luis R. C. Sonora Clean Air Calendar". The goal of the calendar is to conduct public outreach and increase envrionmental awareness in the Yuma/San Luis Region. The project addresses locally indentified needs relevant to the prevention and control of air pollution. Schools and students from both sides of the border participated in this drawing contest to win a place for the 13 selected drawings that would appear in the calendar. Over 346 drawings were entered for the contest from students from both sides of the border.
Brick Kiln Study Regional Center for Border Health, Inc., Secretaria de Salud/Hospital General and the Environmental Heatlh Subcommittee in collaboration with Arizona State University conducted a brick kiln study in two Colonias, La Grillita and Mezquite II, from San Luis R. C. Sonora. The project main goal was to measure the smoke and other hazardous particles in the air that could lead to severe health effects to the residents. Measuring instruments were placed in 2 schools and 2 homes, 1 in each Colonia. In addition, a survey was conducted to residents from both Colonias to raise awareness and measure their knowledge of the side effects of smoke particles. A total of 199 surveys were conducted in which over 80% of the residents reported being aware of the health effects. In addition, there were 11 adults and 26 children with asthma from both colonias.
