Farmer’s Market on Wheels’ RCBH Health Initiative strategy recognized as 2015 Inspiring Rural Health Program during the Annual Arizona Rural Health Conference

This Award recognizes a program within a community, at the local or state level, that involves one or more health professionals or entities, and promotes or facilitates the development of rural health delivery systems

Yuma, Arizona – Farmer’s Market on Wheels, a strategy created under the A Healthy Somerton Initiative sponsored by the Regional Center for Border Health, Inc. was awarded by the Arizona Rural Health Association (AzRHA) as the 2015 Inspiring Rural Health Program.

Mr. Javier Morales, Public Health Initiatives Director, in representation of the non-profit organization based in Yuma County received this award during the 42nd Annual Arizona Rural Health Conference on Tuesday, August 4th, 2015 at the Hilton Sedona Resort and Spa.

 

Also Ms. Amanda Aguirre, President and CEO of the RCBH along with Mrs. Mariajose Almazan, Executive Assistant to the President, Mr. Jesus Garcia, Quality Assurance Director, and Mr. Alex Valenzuela, Social Services Director attended the ceremony.                  

Farmer’s Market on Wheels was selected as the 2015 recipient of the Inspiring Rural Health Program Award based on RCBH’s Director of Public Health Initiatives Mr. Javier Morales’ nomination.  

According to Mrs. Ana Roscetti, Membership Committee Chair of the AzRHA, “The Inspiring Rural Health Program Award recognizes a program within a community, at the local or state level, that involves one or more health professionals or entities, and promotes or facilitates the development of rural health delivery systems.” 

A Healthy Somerton is an initiative sponsored by the Regional Center for Border Health, Inc., with the purpose of improving the wellbeing of residents of Somerton, AZ., by promoting: proper nutrition, physical activity and prevention of childhood obesity. 

Farmer’s Market on Wheels was created to help Somerton and the Cocopah Indian Tribe residents to have access to vegetables and fruits and increase the consumption of those nutritional foods.

The Arizona Rural Health Association, Inc. (AzRHA) was established in 1994 as an independent, organization after serving as the Advisory Committee of the University of Arizona Rural Health Office (RHO) for many years. 

The Association has been established as a not-for-profit corporation. While AzRHA continues to serve as the RHO advisory body, its functions have been expanded to cover many other areas involving advocacy for rural healthcare programs.
