12 graduate from health care training

Forty students from the local area graduated Thursday afternoon and received certificates of completion for various training programs, some ready to further their education and others ready to dive headfirst into the work force.

Eight certified nursing assistants, 15 caregivers, eight medical assistants and nine GED (General Education Development) students are now able to pursue these programs thanks to the Regional Center for Border Health in collaboration with Somerton School District, the city of Yuma and PPEP (Portable Practical Education Preparation).

All of the courses are part of intense fast-track programs that allow for students to receive their certification certificates in a matter of weeks.

Kenia Busane, a graduate of the medical assistant training program, explained that she has always had a passion for helping others and plans to pursue a registered nurse degree.

“I'm starting off from the bottom so I can work my way up,” said Busane, noting that it feels great to have completed the intensive nine-week program.

Andrea Uribe, a graduate of the certified nursing assistant program, said that although her seven-week program was really stressful, it was also a lot of fun and an overall good experience.

Uribe explained that she is the first in her family to pursue higher education and by attending the program, she inspired her sister to also join the medical assistant training program.

Katti Mann, a GED student, shared that her 1-year-old son was the reason she decided to join the Arizona Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (I-BEST) program.

“He made me realize that my life wasn't all in order and I needed to do something to be able to support both of us financially,” she said, commenting that now that she has completed her GED, she is planning to pursue completing the CNA program.
